Biography
Freelance Whales formed in 2008 in Queens, New York, bringing together a collaborative spirit and a willingness to experiment with unconventional textures. The core trio—Judah Dadone (vocals, guitar), Jacob Hyman (drums, percussion), and Kevin Read (bass, arrangements)—crafted a sound that felt intimate yet expansive. The band’s early identity was intertwined with the broader New York indie scene, and their arrangements often featured an array of sonic curiosities, from banjo and glockenspiel to harmonium, creating a warm, cinematic mood.
The lineup evolved over the years, with Doris Cellar joining as a long-time member before leaving in 2013. Chuck Criss joined the project from 2008 to 2022, adding his own contributions to the band’s chemistry. Freelance Whales are recognized for their genre-blending approach—combining indie rock with indie folk and pop sensibilities while embracing experimental textures that set their music apart.
