From Orchids To Octopi an Evolutionary Love Story is a landmark science-theater collaboration that blends biology concepts with intimate storytelling. Written by award-winning playwright Melinda Lopez and commissioned by the NIH to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species, this performance invites audiences to witness evolution as a living, evolving narrative. The world premiere was produced by Catalyst Collaborative@MIT in collaboration with Underground Railway Theater and The Nora Theatre Company at Central Square Theater in Cambridge, MA, in 2010. The piece features a mural that evolves visually to mirror mutations, speciation, and adaptation, with Darwin commentary woven into the dialogue. The project is rooted in partnerships with CC@MIT, MIT, Central Square Theater, the Underground Railway Theater, and related science-and-art organizations, underscoring its status as a pioneering science-theater collaboration.
