Gateways Music Festival Orchestra Tickets

The Gateways Music Festival Orchestra (GMFO) is the core ensemble of Gateways Music Festival, a nationwide initiative that connects and supports professional classical musicians of African descent. GMFO brings together players drawn from major symphonies and faculties, weaving together artistic excellence with a shared mission: to sustain and celebrate Black classical musicians through performance, mentorship, and community.

With roughly 100 players making up the GMFO roster for each festival, the ensemble materials reflect a deep commitment to repertoire that includes works by Black composers such as Florence Price, George Walker, and William Levi Dawson, alongside the timeless masterpieces of the classical canon. The orchestra gained broader recognition with its Carnegie Hall debut in 2022 under conductor Anthony Parnther, featuring Jon Batiste’s world premiere I Can, marking a milestone in the festival’s growth and visibility.

Gateways Music Festival maintains a strong partnership with Eastman School of Music, supported by leadership, strategic expansions through Mellon Foundation grants, and leadership changes bringing renewed momentum under President & Artistic Director Alexander Laing. The festival and GMFO continue to expand opportunities, residencies, and performances across the United States.

Looking ahead, GMFO performers appear across a slate of engagements and collaborations. The 2025 Fall Festival in Rochester (October 13–16, 2025) features Film Scores Live! with Terence Blanchard and The E-Collective at Kodak Hall, Eastman Theatre, plus a variety of Rochester and Eastman events.
