Gemma New is a dynamic conductor and creative force in classical music. Born in New Zealand in 1986, she trained at the University of Canterbury and the Peabody Institute, founded the Lunar Ensemble, and has earned recognition as a bold, insightful conductor with a global outlook. She currently serves as Artistic Advisor & Principal Conductor of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (NZSO), Music Director of the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra, and Principal Guest Conductor of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Her work blends rigorous technique with an adventurous musical imagination, bringing fresh perspectives to orchestral repertoire.

As a recipient of major awards and fellowships, New has become a trusted collaborator for orchestras and audiences alike. Her 2021 Sir Georg Solti Conducting Award highlighted her emerging leadership, while the 2024 ONZM honor reflects her contributions to New Zealand’s musical landscape. Her career continues to rise with debuts and high-profile projects across North America and Europe.

Upcoming seasons feature high-profile debuts and engagements with orchestras worldwide, including the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, KBS Symphony Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Nashville Symphony, Belgian National Orchestra, SWR Sinfonieorchester, and Houston Grand Opera for 2025–26. In 2025, she leads Santa Fe Opera’s Turn of the Screw (debut, July–August) and conducts a Royal Philharmonic Orchestra program in Hull. NZSO fall 2025 concerts will present Wellington, Christchurch, and Auckland with a world premiere NZSO commission by Tabea Squire.
