Grandmaster Furious Five helped shape the sound and message of early hip-hop. Formed in the South Bronx in 1978, the group became one of the genre’s first multi-member crews and set the standard for socially conscious rap. Their landmark track The Message (1982) battled urban realities with precision and rhythm, pushing hip-hop into the mainstream without losing its edge. The Furious Five later released the studio album The Message (1982) and On the Strength (1988), cementing their place in music history. In 2007, the ensemble was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (as Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five), and in 2021 they received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award as part of the Recording Academy Special Merit Awards.
