Grinderman burst onto the scene in 2005/2006 as a raw, primal outlet for collaborators linked to Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds—featuring Warren Ellis, Jim Sclavunos, and Martyn P. Casey. The project carved a stark path through garage-rock and experimental blues, standing apart from Cave’s mainline work while sharing its fearless energy. After a prolific run, Grinderman disbanded in 2011 and briefly rejoined for a performance at Coachella in 2013. Since then, activity has primarily flowed through Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, with Grinderman periodically resurfacing in conversation and archival reissues. In 2025, Grinderman’s full discography received eco-friendly vinyl and CD reissues, reflecting a renewed interest in the project’s stark, muscular sound.
