GroundWorks Dance Theater, founded in 1998 by artistic director David Shimotakahara, stands as a cornerstone of contemporary dance in Ohio. Over more than two decades, GroundWorks created and produced 118 original works, with 67 commissioned by guest artists and 51 contributed by Shimotakahara himself to the company repertoire. The ensemble’s work blended rigorous technique with bold, narrative-driven choreography, earning a dedicated audience in Cleveland and beyond.

As the company approached its 25th anniversary year in 2023, GroundWorks celebrated a storied history and its enduring impact on the regional and national dance scenes. In 2024, GroundWorks premiered MONK, a piece inspired by Thelonious Monk's music, marking another milestone in their mission to fuse live music with dynamic movement. The company announced its voluntary dissolution in Ohio in November 2024, with final performances in the summer of 2024 at Cain Park and at the Heinz Poll Summer Dance Festival in Akron. Although 2025 sees no new tour dates, GroundWorks leaves a lasting archive and influence for future generations of dancers and choreographers.
