The Hart Institute for Women Conductors (HIWC) was founded in 2015 by The Dallas Opera to address gender imbalance on opera podiums. Described as the world’s only program of its kind, HIWC has attracted candidates from around the world, with 500+ applications from 40 nations in its first decade. The institute culminates its residency with public performances alongside The Dallas Opera Orchestra during January showcases in Dallas, Texas.

As HIWC approaches its 10th anniversary, the program continues to expand with new fellowships and initiatives, including the Martha R. and Preston A. Peak Fellowship and the inaugural Peak Fellow, Jingqi Zhu, for 2025/2026. HIWC received international recognition in 2025 with the International Opera Awards for Equal Opportunities and Impact.
