Hip Hop Listening Sessions began as part of the Kennedy Center's Hip Hop Culture program, launching around 2019 with editions like Native Tongues Edition. These collaborative listening experiences are guided by ethnomusicologists and DJs, offering intimate explorations of hip hop history, sound, and influence. Each edition brings a fresh theme and a curated listening journey, often featuring a Top5-style segment (LifeIn5) and themed focus areas such as Iconic Groups, Ladies First, and Love in Hip Hop. The events are hosted at the Kennedy Center's River Pavilion and Millennium Stage in Washington, DC, inviting fans to engage with the culture in a thoughtful, scholarly, and accessible way.
