About the performer: Hip Hop Theater is synonymous with the blend of MCing, breakdancing, graffiti, and DJing woven into theatrical storytelling. The movement gained prominence with the Hip-Hop Theater Festival, founded in 2000 by Danny Hoch, which helped bring hip-hop theatre to venues across the United States and internationally. The festival evolved into Hi-ARTS (Hip-Hop Arts & Theater), re-emerging in 2011 with a focus on residencies and programs for hip-hop and urban theatre artists in NYC. Danny Hoch’s work has earned two Obie Awards, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Sundance Writers Fellowship, and the CalArts/Alpert Award in Theatre, underscoring the critical and artistic impact of this genre.
2025 programming shines with Echoes of the Future, a 25th-anniversary celebration at National Sawdust (Brooklyn) on Oct 9, 2025, alongside related events like Rebel Verses and Spirit & Flow in spring 2025. Stay tuned for updates and reserve your tickets as dates are announced. Hi-ARTS continues to engage communities through social channels and partnerships, offering residencies, workshops, and performances that keep hip-hop theatre vibrant and accessible.
