The Hispanic Theatre Festival of Miami, administered by Teatro Avante, is a cornerstone of Hispanic and international theatre in South Florida. Since its inception in 1986 as the International Hispanic Theatre Festival, the event has grown into a renowned nonprofit platform that brings works from Argentina, Chile, Spain, Mexico, Venezuela-USA, and the United States to audiences across Miami. Under the leadership of Teatro Avante, the festival features post-performance forums, workshops, and dynamic programming that engage both creators and communities. In 2025, the festival marked its 39th edition with performances September 4–28, across venues like the Adrienne Arsht Center, Koubek Center, Westchester Cultural Arts Center, and Key Biscayne Community Center. The festival has earned five international awards recognizing its contribution to Hispanic theatre. While founder Mario Ernesto Sánchez passed away in April 2025, the festival continues under Teatro Avante, honoring his legacy and expanding opportunities for artists and audiences alike.
