Founded in 1991 as a memorial to Ivan Hlinka and later renamed in 2018 to honor Wayne Gretzky, the event showcases rising stars in a competitive, showcase-style format. In 2025, the tournament ran August 11–16, with competition hosted in two European cities: Brno, Czech Republic at the Winning Group Arena, and Trenčín, Slovakia at the Pavol Demitra Ice Stadium. The eight-team field competed in a preliminary round, followed by semifinals and medal games. The United States captured gold in 2025, Sweden took silver, and Canada earned bronze. The 2026 edition is planned to return to Edmonton, Alberta, with tickets expected to be released later in the year.
