Hubert Sumlin stands among the most influential figures in blues guitar. Joining Howlin’ Wolf’s band in 1954, Sumlin became the primary guitarist and a driving force behind the legendary Rocking Chair era. His high-energy, vocal-like playing—featuring sharp bursts, deliberate silences, and adventurous phrasing—earned him admiration from generations of players and listeners. Though he passed away in 2011, Sumlin’s impact continues to shape blues and rock alike, with tributes and reissues keeping his work in the spotlight.
