Il Viaggio a Reims is a key performer on our stages and in the history of opera buffa. Originally a one-act ensemble celebrating Charles X’s coronation, the work was composed by Gioachino Rossini and features a cast of 14 soloists. The piece is notable for its absence of a traditional overture, a characteristic sometimes attributed to later reinterpretations. The libretto by Luigi Balocchi, adapted from Madame de Staël’s Corinne ou l'Italie, captures a festive, comic spirit that showcases Rossini’s genius for ensemble writing.
