The Illinois State Redbirds softball program began in 1996 and quickly established itself as a consistent MVC contender. Under the leadership of longtime head coach Melinda Fischer, ISU achieved nine NCAA Regional appearances (as of 2012) and accumulated numerous conference titles, including 10 MVC regular-season titles and 5 MVC Tournament championships. Fischer retired in 2022 as the winningest coach in ISU softball history, solidifying a legacy that the program continues to honor. In 2025, the field inside Marian Kneer Softball Stadium was named Melinda Fischer Field, recognizing her impact on student-athletes, competition, and ISU athletics as a whole.
