Innov Gnawa is a forward-thinking Gnawa collective known for fusing the traditional guembri-driven trance with contemporary percussion and soulful, groove-forward rhythms. Formed in 2014 in New York City under the leadership of Ma’alem Hassan Ben Jaafer, the project has carved out a unique space where ancient gnawa traditions meet modern, hypnotic soundscapes. Their music has earned critical acclaim and notable collaborations, including a Grammy-nominated pairing on Bonobo's Bambro Koyo Ganda.

Rooted in Moroccan Gnawa heritage, Innov Gnawa channels spiritual and communal energy through immersive live performances. The ensemble rose from the urban crossroads of New York to become a global ambassador for Gnawa, touring internationally and inspiring audiences with a sound described as a blend of ritual trance and contemporary blues-infused rhythms.

Upcoming 2025 tour highlights include a stop in Berkeley, CA at The Freight on Aug 22, and a string of Brooklyn/NYC performances from Sep through Dec. They’ll bring the live Gnawa experience to Toronto on Oct 4 and close the year with December dates at The Owl venues in Berkeley, CA (Dec 22 and Dec 27).
