Founded in 1980 by Bob and Joan Welch as Inland Northwest’s first resident professional theatre (Interplayers Ensemble), the company became known for dynamic and innovative productions that blended straight plays with musical theatre. In 2014, the ensemble merged with Lake City Playhouse, and the operation eventually moved to The Modern Theater Spokane, with the Spokane venue closing by 2016. The surviving entity continued in Coeur d’Alene, operating under The Modern Theater brand as Lake City Playhouse. As of 2025–2026, Lake City Playhouse remains the active regional theatre in the area, while Interplayers no longer operates as an independent entity.
