Io Echo is a Los Angeles-based musical duo formed in 2010 by Ioanna Gika and Leopold Ross. Known for blending rock with Eastern motifs—often described as New Orientalism—their work weaves traditional instruments like the Japanese koto harp and Chinese violins into expansive, cinematic soundscapes. The project gained rapid attention after Trent Reznor hand-picked them to open for Nine Inch Nails on the Wave Goodbye Tour, helping them reach a broader audience across major festival stages such as Coachella, Lollapalooza, and SXSW. In addition to their studio work, Io Echo has curated immersive experiences like PLAY MOCA at the Museum of Modern Art LA and contributed to film scores, including the Rebel project. While activity slowed after 2017, Ioanna Gika has released solo material (Thalassa, 2019) and continues exploring innovative sonic expressions.
