Jaap van Zweden is one of today’s leading conductors, known for his expansive Mahler cycles, deep Romantic repertoire, and commitment to contemporary premieres. Born in Amsterdam in 1960, he began his career as a violinist with the world-renowned Concertgebouw Orchestra before transitioning to conducting in the mid-1990s. Over the years, he has led major ensembles around the globe, including top posts with the Hong Kong Philharmonic and the New York Philharmonic (2018–2024). He currently serves as Music Director of the Seoul Philharmonic and is the Designate for Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, a role that will begin in 2026–27. Off the podium, van Zweden and his wife Aaltje co-found the Papageno Foundation, supporting autism-focused charitable work.
