Johannes Goebel is a pivotal figure in contemporary electronic music and media arts. As the founding director of the Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) at RPI, Goebel helped shape a unique intersection of performance, research, and technology from 2002 until his retirement in November 2022. Before EMPAC, he served as the founding director of the Institute for Music and Acoustics (IMA) at ZKM in Karlsruhe from 1990 to 2002, contributing to a global dialogue on sound, media, and live performance.
