John Russell was a pivotal figure in the UK free-improvisation scene, best known for his expansive work on acoustic guitar and his enduring contribution as a concert organizer and promoter. As the founder of Mopomoso, a landmark London-based free-improvisation series launched in 1991, Russell helped shape a crucial platform for improvisers from around the world. His career spans decades of leadership as a performer and collaborator, with a discography that includes influential releases on labels such as Incus, CAW, Acta, Emanem, and more. Though he passed away on January 19, 2021, his impact on improvisational music and live performance continues to be felt in venues, festivals, and the ongoing Mopomoso tradition.
