Born in Helsinki, Finland on October 14, 1952, Kija Saariaho was a defining voice in contemporary classical music. After studies at the Helsinki Conservatory (Sibelius Academy) and further training in Freiburg and at IRCAM in Paris, she relocated to Paris in 1982 to collaborate with the Institute for Research and Coordination in Acoustics/Music under Pierre Boulez. Saariaho’s music is celebrated for its shimmering, slowly evolving textures, rich timbres, and a seamless integration of electronics with acoustic instruments — a hallmark of modern spectralism.
