Kitka is a distinguished Oakland, California-based vocal ensemble founded in 1979, dedicated to preserving and performing Balkan, Slavic, Baltic, and related women’s vocal traditions. With a decades-spanning history, Kitka blends scholarly research with lush, mother-daughter harmonies, inviting audiences to experience timeless songs through a contemporary lens. The group has earned acclaim from the NEA, Chorus America, and the American Choral Directors’ Association, and has been honored with notable commissions and awards, including the Hewlett 50 Arts Award for their production BABA: The Life and Death of Stana and the 2017 Gerbode Foundation Award for Iron Shoes. Kitka remains a vital voice in world music, continually expanding its repertoire and embracing new collaborations while honoring its roots.

Upcoming appearances in 2025 bring Kitka’s signature sound to new spaces. On March 6, 2025, the Kitka Quartet will perform at The Venus Showcase, The Lost Church, in San Francisco.
