Makoto Ozone is a renowned Japanese pianist, composer, and bandleader whose career spans solo performances, intimate duos, innovative trios, and expansive big-band projects. Born in Kobe in 1961, he studied at Berklee College of Music and rose to prominence through collaborations in Gary Burton’s circle. Ozone has worked with jazz luminaries such as Chick Corea, Branford Marsalis, and Michael Brecker, earning recognition across cross-over and classical-themed projects that have earned Grammy nominations. A cornerstone of his discography is his leadership of No Name Horses, a fifteen-piece big band celebrating their 20th anniversary in 2025 with Day 1 album lineup changes. In 2023 he formed TRiNFiNiTY with Shimpei Ogawa and Kunito Kitai, releasing their debut in January 2024 and continuing with Day 1-era material through Mo-Zone Universal. Ozone’s awards include a 2003 Berklee honorary doctorate, the 2010 Frederic Chopin Passport award, and Japan’s Medal of Honor with Purple Ribbon (2018). His discography spans solo, duo, trio, and big-band projects, with recent releases like Day 1 (2024) and TRiNFiNiTY (2024), plus A Night in Tokyo (2023) and Park Street Kids (2022).
