Marsalis's Tuba Concerto is a distinctive work by composer and performer Wynton Marsalis. Commissioned by the Philadelphia Orchestra and premiered by Carol Jantsch on December 9, 2021, this multi-movement concerto blends jazz-inflected sensibilities with rich orchestral textures. The first movement, Up!, showcases virtuosic multiphonics and theatrical narration, while the finale nods to bebop and urban soundscapes. Since its debut, the piece has been highlighted in major performances, including a 2024 presentation by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra with Aubrey Foard as soloist, noted for its city-portrait storytelling and vibrant orchestral colors.
