About the program
The Missouri Southern State Lions basketball program has a storied legacy, including the 1999-2000 squad that posted a 30-3 record and advanced to the NCAA Division II Final Four. That historic team is enshrined in MSSU Athletics Hall of Fame, reflecting the program’s tradition of excellence. Under head coach Sam McMahon (since 2022), the team has accumulated a competitive record, currently standing at 13-9 overall with a 7-6 conference mark and a 9-4 home record through part of the season. The Lions play in Joplin, MO, and compete in notable conferences with exciting non-conference matchups.
Upcoming highlights
Key 2025-26 schedule notes include a home opener on Oct 21, 2025 against Meet The Lions at Robert Ellis Young Gymnasium, an exhibition at Missouri State on Nov 4, and MIAA/GAC Challenge games on Nov 14-15 at Young Gym. Some games may be relocated to Leggett & Platt Athletic Center (LAPAC) as renovations progress. Phase 1 of the renovation at LAPAC began in 2025, modernizing the court, bleachers, and facilities with completion targeted by January 2026. For fans, this means a refreshed game-day experience while the Lions build toward another strong season.
