Morton Subotnick stands among the most influential figures in electronic music. A co-founder of the San Francisco Tape Music Center with Ramon Sender, Subotnick helped shape the language of synthesized sound and live-electronic performance. His 1967 release Silver Apples of the Moon, commissioned for disc, popularized Buchla-based synthesis and established a template for future generations of electronic composers. Over the decades, Subotnick has expanded his sonic universe through a prolific catalog that includes The Wild Bull (1968), Touch (1969), Sidewinder (1971), Four Butterflies (1973), and Until Spring (1976), as well as a lineage of ghost-electronics in works like Liquid Strata and Parallel Lines. His works have been issued comprehensively by Mode Records as Electronic Works and Complete Piano Works, offering listeners a broad view of his exploration from modular synthesis to intimate piano pieces. Subotnick’s career is marked by prestigious fellowships and awards, including Guggenheim, Rockefeller Grants, the ASCAP John Cage Award, SEAMUS Lifetime Achievement, and an honorary CalArts doctorate.
