The MSBOA All-State experience is built on a rigorous audition process. Announced etudes, scales, and sight-reading are completed in a 10-minute recorded audition using an identification number. Approximately 2,500 students audition each year for about 400 seats across five ensembles: Middle School String Orchestra, Middle School Band, High School Full Orchestra, High School Band, and High School Jazz Ensemble. Rehearsals in January culminate in a concert during the Michigan Music Conference (MMC). In 2026, All-State performances are scheduled for January 24, 2026 at DeVos Performance Hall in Grand Rapids. MMC 2025 took place January 23–25, 2025, featuring performances at venues including DeVos Place and the Amway Grand Plaza/J.W. Marriott complex. Ticketing for All-State events is typically handled through the Michigan Music Conference hub.
