Founded in 1985 by Kumu Hula Patrick Makuakāne, the group has earned recognition for its innovative approach to hula, weaving rich navigation between sacred tradition and modern performance. Led by Makuakāne—recipient of the 2023 MacArthur Fellow (often called the MacArthur Genius Grant)—Na Lei Hulu continues to push artistic boundaries while honoring Hawaiʻi’s cultural legacy.
