People behind the production
NINAGAWA Macbeth is the legendary Japanese reinterpretation of Shakespeare’s tragedy, created by director Yukio Ninagawa. Premiering in 1980 with the Ninagawa Company, the production is renowned for its lush, cinematic staging that blends feudal Japan imagery with Shakespearean drama. The visual concept features cherry blossoms, samurai warriors, kabuki witches, and a Buddha-alter (butsudan) on stage, complemented by a unique score that marries Buddhist chant with Western classical music.
