Olivier Messiaen (born December 10, 1908 in Avignon, France – died April 27, 1992 in Clichy, France) was one of the most influential composers of the 20th century. A prominent teacher and organist, Messiaen's work spans vibrant organ works, orchestral pieces, and deeply spiritual choral and melodic writing. He explored modes of limited transposition, complex rhythms, and the natural world, famously incorporating birdsong into his music. His impact reaches beyond performance into the training of generations of composers, including Boulez, Stockhausen, and Xenakis.
