Opera Santa Barbara (OSB) has been a cornerstone of Santa Barbara’s cultural landscape since 1994, delivering compelling operatic productions and robust educational programs for the community. Founded by Marilyn Gilbert and Nathan Rundlett, OSB has staged 70+ operas and remains committed to accessibility, innovation, and artistic excellence.

Led by Artistic & General Director Kostis Protopapas since December 2017, OSB has expanded training programs such as the Chrisman Studio Artist Program and the Santa Barbara Youth Opera, fostering local talent and audience growth while maintaining a high standard of professional performance.

OSB was an early streaming adopter during the 2020–21 season and was among California’s few companies to present three live operas that season, highlighting its commitment to artistic resilience and reaching wider audiences. In 2023, the company earned a National Endowment for the Arts grant for An American Dream, underscoring its impact on contemporary opera and community engagement.

For the 2025–2026 season, all productions are staged at the Lobero Theatre, including Cavalleria Rusticana (Nov 7 & 9, 2025), Caesar and Cleopatra (Feb 27 & Mar 1, 2026), and Elmer Gantry (May 1 & 3, 2026). OSB continues to expand its educational mission while delivering professional, accessible opera in the heart of Santa Barbara.
