Orpheus Alive is a pivotal ballet score written by Missy Mazzoli in 2019, commissioned by the National Ballet of Canada and premiered in Toronto on November 15, 2019. The work sits at the crossroads of contemporary classical music and modern ballet, inviting audiences into an intricate world where mythic storytelling meets expressive orchestration. Its companion suite, Orpheus Undone, debuted worldwide with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under conductor Riccardo Muti on March 31, 2022. In parallel, Chaconne offers a Balanchine-inspired ballet set to Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice, first staged January 22, 1976 at the New York State Theater, Lincoln Center. Together, these works highlight Missy Mazzoli’s enduring impact on dance and music theatre.
