Founded in 1997 by Rafael Palacios, Sankofa Danzafro is a Bogotá/Medellín–based Afro-Colombian dance company renowned for blending traditional Afro-Colombian movements with contemporary performance dramaturgy. The company has become a leading voice in exploring African diaspora narratives through dynamic choreography, live music, and powerful storytelling. Sankofa Danzafro tours internationally, bringing the vibrancy of Colombian cultural heritage to audiences around the world.

Their works, including La Ciudad de los Otros (2010) and Behind the South: Dances for Manuel (Changó), have earned critical acclaim for their rigorous technique, innovative staging, and thoughtful engagement with identity, memory, and social history.

In 2024, Behind the South: Dances for Manuel was highlighted at the Venice Dance Biennale as a salient examination of African diaspora narratives. The company has performed at The Joyce Theater in New York (2018–2019) and has continued to tour internationally with multiple engagements. In 2025, Sankofa Danzafro will bring The City of Others to Vancouver Playhouse on February 21–22 as part of DanceHouse. The troupe has earned prestigious recognition, including the Premio Nacional de Danza (2008), Premio Nacional de las Artes (2017), and ONU recognition for Pasos en la Tierra (2010).
