The Scott Joplin Chamber Orchestra (SJCO) is a cornerstone of Houston’s Black musical heritage. Founded in 1983 under the umbrella of the Community Music Center of Houston (CMCH), SJCO was created by Music Director Dr. Anne Lundy to showcase Black composers and provide opportunities for Black instrumentalists. Today, the roughly 45-member, all-volunteer ensemble works to preserve Black music traditions while expanding orchestral repertoire for Black musicians.

With a history of collaborative performances, SJCO has shared stages with the Houston Symphony and contributed to Beyoncé’s national anthem performance at Super Bowl XXXVIII (2004). These moments reflect the ensemble’s mission: accessible, high-quality classical music rooted in cultural heritage.
