Formed in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1999, Serrated Scalpel carved out a niche in old-school death metal with melodic elements and dark, war- and occult-themed lyrics. The band released two full-length albums—Suspended in Misery (2002) and Teeming Gallows (2005)—both independently produced, along with the 2001 demo Serrated Scalpel. They contributed the track Encomium to the Blood In The Water compilation on SOD Records in 2002. Although the group disbanded in 2005 and has remained largely inactive, Serrated Scalpel holds a notable place in Canadian death metal history for their intense riffing, grim atmosphere, and independent spirit.
