Founded in 2003 as Queen City Soul Slam and led by Slammaster Bluz (Boris Rogers), Slamcharlotte Poetry Slam has become a cornerstone of Charlotte's spoken word and slam poetry scene. The group sparked national recognition with back-to-back National Poetry Slam championships in 2007 and 2008, becoming the first southern team to win in 14 years. In 2018, SlamCharlotte earned the Grand Slam Championship, further cementing their status as a powerhouse in the poetry community. Bluz himself ranked 13th in the world at the Individual World Poetry Slam (IWPS) in 2007, a testament to the group’s depth and performance prowess. Month after month, Slam Charlotte has hosted vibrant slams at Knight Gallery/Spirit Square and the McGlohon Theatre as part of Blumenthal Performing Arts programming, becoming a staple of Charlotte’s arts scene.
