Spector Dance, founded in 1997 by Fran Spector Atkins and Jim Atkins, is a pioneering dance company rooted in Marina, California, in Monterey County. Known for blending dance with visual media, spoken word, and a research-driven music score created from interviews and community research, Spector Dance creates performances that explore social issues with clarity and heart. The company collaborates with community partners such as the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI), United Farm Workers, and Rancho Cielo to ground their work in real-world contexts. Their work has earned recognition across the arts community, including an Outstanding Arts Organization award in Monterey County (2007) and a Florence Haspel Zeve Award (2020).
