He was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2009 and was knighted in 2019 for his services to choral music, cementing his status as a leading figure in classical music. Under his direction, King's College Cambridge expanded its repertoire—embracing Latin works and new commissions, including the annual Christmas carol commission starting in 1984. Cleobury also led the BBC Singers from 1995 to 2007, later serving as their conductor laureate. A posthumous recording, Bach: St Matthew Passion (King’s College Recordings), was released in 2020, preserving his musical legacy for new audiences.
