Strapping Young Lad (SYL) emerged from Vancouver in 1994, spearheaded by Devin Townsend. Known for industrial metal inflected with aggressive death metal textures, SYL left a distinctive mark with complex rhythms and a wall-of-sound production. The project had active periods from 1994–1998 and 2002–2007, delivering a string of influential albums that continue to influence extreme metal artists today.
