Taichi Fukumura is a dynamic conductor and music leader known for his balanced blend of precise interpretation, collaborative artistry, and a commitment to repertoire expansion. Born in Tokyo and raised in Boston, he has built a distinguished career as both a rising conductor and a versatile cultural advocate. Currently the Assistant Conductor of The Cleveland Orchestra and the Music Director of the Illinois Symphony Orchestra (ISO), Fukumura is shaping programming, fostering new works, and guiding orchestras across the United States and beyond.

With a foundation in violin performance from Boston University and doctoral training in orchestral conducting from Northwestern University, Fukumura brings a performers’ sensibility to the podium. His fluency in English and Japanese supports his international engagements and collaborative work with artists and audiences around the world.

Upcoming engagements include debuts with the Bamberg Symphony and the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony, along with guest conducting appearances with Utah, North Carolina, Eugene, Delaware, and Colorado Springs Symphony orchestras. The Illinois Symphony Orchestra continues to pursue repertoire expansion and commissions, with a world premiere in the 2025/26 season supported by ISO partners, and plans for an enhanced Cleveland Orchestra season featuring Miami residencies and collaborations with Itzhak Perlman, including the Cinema Serenade program.
