The Art Institute of Chicago is one of the nation’s oldest and largest art museums, located at 111 S Michigan Ave in downtown Chicago. Founded in 1879 (originating from the Chicago Academy of Design/Chicago Academy of Fine Arts), the institution expanded with the Modern Wing in 2009, placing it among the most comprehensive collections in the United States. With more than 300,000 works across 11 curatorial departments, the museum offers a vast range of art—from classical to contemporary. The Modern Wing focuses particularly on 20th–21st century art, providing a dynamic context for today’s exhibitions and critical conversations. The Institute also includes SAIC (School of the Art Institute of Chicago) as part of its broader cultural ecosystem, connecting education and public programs with the museum’s galleries.
