The Art of the Trio represents a pivotal chapter in modern jazz. Led by pianist Brad Mehldau, with longtime collaborators Larry Grenadier on bass and Jorge Rossy on drums, this celebrated five-volume series (Volume 1–5) captures a decade of exploration from 1996 to 2000, released between 1997 and 2001 on Warner Bros. The trio reimagines standards, Mehldau originals, and adventurous pop/rock reinterpretations like Blame It on My Youth, I Didn’t Know What Time It Was, and Exit Music, highlighting Mehldau's evolving voice as a composer and interpreter.
