People behind the production
The Collaboration is a dramatic stage work by writer Anthony McCarten that reimagines the high-stakes collaboration between Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat during 1984–1985. Premiering in the West End at The Young Vic in early 2022, the production later transferred to Broadway’s Samuel J. Friedman Theatre from November 2022 through February 11, 2023. This intimate, character-driven piece explored the tensions, ambitions, and artistic breakthroughs that defined late-80s art and culture, brought vividly to life by a talented company led by Paul Bettany as Warhol and Jeremy Pope as Basquiat. The play’s resonance extended into major press coverage from Vogue, Entertainment Weekly, Smithsonian, and Broadway trade outlets, signaling its impact within contemporary theatre. While a 2025 tour has not been announced and the Broadway run has concluded, the production has inspired a forthcoming film adaptation that expands on its cinematic potential.
