The Florentine Straw Hat, or Il cappello di paglia di Firenze, is a sparkling four-act opera comique by the legendary composer Nino Rota. Based on Eugène Labiche and Marc-Michel's farce Un chapeau de paille d’Italie, this work blends witty storytelling with memorable music. Having premiered in 1955 at Teatro Massimo in Palermo, the piece gained later notoriety with American debuts in Santa Fe (1977) and New York (1978). Today, the performer is celebrated around the world, including a contemporary Czech premiere in Ostrava with the National Moravian-Silesian Theatre (NDM). The Ostrava presentation features Italian language with Czech and English subtitles, ensuring accessibility for diverse audiences.
