Biography
Originating in Madison, Wisconsin, The Handphibians emerged from a culture of Brazilian percussion education and community performances. Under the leadership of Robert Schoville, the ensemble built its sound by studying the rhythmic language of Brazilian escolas de samba and Afro-Brazilian forms like Samba Reggae and Maracatu. The project grew from education-centered workshops to original concert works that celebrate collective rhythm and cultural exchange.
