Documented collaborators

The Man Ray Project is a boundary-pushing performer collaboration from Alliance for New Music-Theatre (ANMT). Created by composer Andrew Earle Simpson and librettist Susan Galbraith, this endeavor blends Baroque opera pastiche with blues, Spike Jones-inspired humor, and cabaret artistry. The project draws on Man Ray’s iconic Shakespearean Equation: Julius Caesar painting from the Phillips Collection and reimagines the artist onstage as Wo-Man Ray, alongside a mannequin, in a surreal, music-driven stage experience.

Originally developed as a Short Gems digital piece within The Phillips Collection’s context, the concept expanded into a live performance with its world premiere at Atlas Performing Arts Center in Washington, DC, running September 12–22, 2024. The Man Ray Project continues to captivate audiences with a distinctive blend of historical inspiration and theatrical experimentation.
