People behind the production
The Pitmen Painters is a landmark play by Lee Hall that brings to life the Ashington Group of miners who turned to painting in the 1930s. Premiering at Live Theatre in Newcastle in September 2007, it quickly moved to the National Theatre in 2008, then to Broadway in 2010 and the West End in 2011. The production won the Evening Standard Award for Best Play in 2008, cementing its place in contemporary theatre history. While not a music project, The Pitmen Painters remains a powerful stage experience that blends social history with evocative storytelling.
