From 1997 to 2019, he served as Chief Conductor of the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, and he led the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra from 2016 to 2022. Since 2024, he has been the Principal Guest Conductor of the RTVE Symphony Orchestra and Chorus and the Honorary Guest Conductor of the Copenhagen Philharmonic. He is also conductor laureate of the Swedish Chamber Orchestra and is known for roots-based collaborations and adventurous programming.

Beyond the podium, Dausgaard has an extensive recording career with major labels including BIS, Da Capo, and Chandos, with over 100 CDs that cover complete cycles of Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, and Langgaard. In March 2025, he published Flaskepost, his first collection of poems, adding a literary dimension to his artistic profile.
