Tom Constanten is a key figure at the intersection of rock, avant-garde classical, and experimental composition. Best known for his time as the Grateful Dead's keyboardist from 1968 to 1970, Constanten contributed to landmark albums including Anthem of the Sun, Aoxomoxoa, and Live/Dead. He later pursued rigorous study with Luciano Berio at Mills College and Karlheinz Stockhausen in Europe, aligning with composers and performers like Steve Reich to push the boundaries of sound. Today, Constanten performs with The Anthem String Quartet, blending his iconic improvisational approach with chamber textures to create immersive live experiences.
